A Practice Studio for Participation, Inclusion and Accountability

Community Powered Responses exists to help organisations create the conditions for meaningful participation. Participation is about creating opportunities for people to influence the decisions that affect their lives. It is expressed through relationships, leadership, organisational culture and everyday practice.

Across humanitarian action, international and community development, human services and the private sector, Community Powered Responses supports organisations, practitioners and communities through participatory action research, social inclusion, organisational development, systems strengthening, professional development, coaching, facilitation, writing and practical learning resources.

As a practice studio, these areas are intentionally connected. Community engagement shapes learning resources. Reflection inspires new ideas. Research strengthens practice. Writing contributes to public dialogue. Each project adds to a growing body of knowledge that continues to evolve through practice.

Philosophy

Meaningful change begins with relationships

Community Powered Responses is grounded in the belief that meaningful change begins with relationships. Communities bring knowledge, lived experience and leadership. Organisations bring influence, resources and responsibility. Participation creates opportunities for these different forms of knowledge to come together, strengthening decisions, accountability and long-term change.

This understanding has been shaped by communities, colleagues and mentors, alongside generations of scholars, activists and practitioners who have expanded the way participation, power and justice are understood.

The work of Paulo Freire continues to influence the practice of dialogue, critical reflection and collective learning. Linda Tuhiwai Smith reminds us that research can either reinforce existing power or contribute to community self-determination. Community Powered Responses also draws inspiration from bell hooks, Kimberlé Crenshaw, Patricia Hill Collins and Sara Ahmed, whose work continues to deepen conversations about intersectionality, institutions, belonging and transformative practice. Disability justice has equally shaped this practice through the work of Mia Mingus and Sins Invalid, whose vision of interdependence, dignity, access and collective liberation continues to expand what participation can become.

Community Powered Responses seeks to learn, question, adapt and contribute to the ongoing work of creating more just and inclusive systems.

Creating the Conditions for Participation

Participation flourishes when organisations intentionally create the conditions that allow it to grow.

Leadership, organisational culture, governance, accountability, learning and relationships all shape whether people are able to contribute, influence decisions and share their knowledge. Community engagement is one part of this work. Equally important is strengthening the organisational systems and cultures that support participation over time. By strengthening practitioners, organisations and systems together, communities are better able to influence the decisions that affect their lives.

Founder

Lana Woolf

Community Powered Responses was founded by Lana Woolf, a social inclusion specialist, participatory action researcher and community development practitioner with more than twenty-five years of experience across humanitarian action and international and community development.

Working alongside governments, United Nations agencies, managing contractors, international and local organisations, rights-holder organisations and communities across Australia, the Pacific, Asia and Africa has shaped both the philosophy and practice of Community Powered Responses.

Lana has contributed to applied research and global guidance on the inclusion of people with diverse Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Gender Expression and Sex Characteristics (SOGIESC) in humanitarian action. This work has helped build the evidence base for a field where little research previously existed, informing global guidance, organisational practice and community-led approaches to inclusion.

Let’s create the conditions together

Community Powered Responses continues to grow as a practice studio where ideas, partnerships, creativity and learning strengthen participation, inclusion and accountability.
