Join Lana and co for a two-day Gender & Development workshop.
This two-day workshop unpacks traditional ‘gender’ (read women) inclusion in local and international development. It moves to include why and how we must include people with all their gendered diversity in community development and humanitarian contexts.
You will receive: Two jam-packed days of collaborative, engaging exercises, activities, case studies, discussions, and tools to support your (local and international) community development practice. Case studies are in various thematic areas, including Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Sexual Rights and Reproductive Health (SRHR), Social Protection, Livelihoods, housing/shelter and Humanitarian Response. Each person will be given a workbook. Vegetarian/gluten-free snacks and tea/coffee/water are provided.
Training Objectives
The overall objectives are to:
1. Strengthen your understanding of the complexity of gendered discrimination and the responsibility to include people with diverse gender identities and expressions in gendered programming and projects.
2. Support development practitioners in engaging with diverse Sexual Orientations, Gender Identity, Expression & Sex Characteristics (SOGIESC), Civil Society organisations (CSOs) and community members through increased awareness and confidence in discussing relevant issues.
3. Introduce emerging good practices in some key areas.
By the end of this training, you will have a better understanding of:
- Gender and other gender-related concepts
- The historical development & the concept of feminist theory
- The norms that reinforce sexism, heteronormativity, cisnormativity and gender binarism in the social services and development sector
- A gender transformative approach that includes people with diverse genders and diverse gender histories.
- Major theoretical perspectives on gender and development
- How gendered-based systemic discrimination works in the development system.
- Data gathering that includes people outside of binary gender norms.
- The differences between gender identity markers and lived experiences and how this relates to better development programming.

Earlier in the year International Water Centre supported myself and colleagues from The University of the South Pacific and Solomon Islands National University to take part in this 6 week course diving into diverse SOGIESC and development. Relevant to anyone working with or alongside communities in the development and humanitarian space. So many learnings, challenges to the way we practice, and chances to explore topics in a safe environment. Lana Woolf is a gentle and generous facilitator. Recommended!
